BIA is an anacronym for Business Improvement Area – a
designated geographic area in a municipality. There
are over 230 BIAs in Ontario. The Thornbury BIA runs
west from Foodland on Hwy #26 to BBQ Boyz
and North on Bruce St. from The Dam Pub
to the Thornbury harbour. Louisa St. and Hester Street are also
part of the BIA area. Anybody opening a business in
this designated area automatically becomes part of
the Thornbury BIA.
Our Mandate
The mandate of the BIA was originally, in the 1970’s, to improve and
beautify the business area. We have evolved into a group that also
markets our area, and its special attributes, plus we sponsor events
such as Thornbury’s Olde Fashion Christmas.
How We Work
A volunteer Board of Management administers the BIA.
Our funding comes from a special tax levy, paid by
all BIA businesses, and collected by the town.
What are Our Goals?
Our ultimate goal is to make Thornbury a place
where the local community and visitors want to
shop, to dine, to relax and to return to; while
preserving the original beauty and ambiance of
our village. This will create a healthy environment
for both the entrepreneur and the visitor, as
well as develop as strong sense of community
pride.
